When it comes to the fashion world, Spike Lee may not be the first name that comes to mind, but today it should be.

The famed director and cultural icon has collaborated with Sprayground on some extremely fashionable yet durable backpacks for the fast-paced lives of millennials, yuppies and people everywhere that keep a tight schedule and need their computers at every moment. Besides getting the seal of approval from two of his biggest critics (his children), Lee is well aware of the impact that he’s had in the fashion world since the 1980s and how his filmmaking has helped create trends.

"I mean it was fashion to have Mars Blackmon wearing Jordans in '86, so I don't think that doing this enables me to do something I can't do in film. I mean, where did Malcolm X hats come from? The X hats, it came from the film. So we've been able to establish a lot of stuff in our films that people have caught on and become fashion," Lee said at a round-table event at his Brooklyn-based production company, 40 Acres and a Mule.

And when it comes to his visibility during this tough cultural climate, considering the grand jury rulings in Staten Island, New York, and Ferguson, Missouri, Lee makes it very clear that he has remained true to himself, his beliefs and simply does and says what he feels is right.

"Everybody doesn't have the same path, everybody can't do everything, but for me I just felt I could never just stand on the sidelines and just go by without speaking. But, I've always been careful [so] when I do that [I] preface whatever I say. If I say this is my opinion and I'm not a spokesperson on behalf of 45 million African-Americans, it's just my opinion."

The Mars Blackmon Pixels Backpack and the 40 Acres Satchel/Backpack are available to order now at Sprayground.com. And, if you’re lucky enough to be in NYC tonight, swing by the Sprayground x Spike Lee pop-up shop in Brooklyn at 40 Acres and a Mule, where you can purchase both bags before their official release date of Monday, December 15.
