Zoe Kravitz Defends Zendaya Against Fashion Police Locs Comment

Says Black women "shouldn't have to change" for fashion.

Zoe Kravitz has Zendaya's back. The Insurgent actress, daughter of Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz, spoke up on the Disney star's behalf against racist remarks made by E!'s Fashion Police commentators about Zendaya's locs at the Oscars.

At Wall Miami promoting her Ocean Drive magazine cover, the long-braided beauty said, “Black women have been wearing their hair like this forever and I think it’s really sad that it’s even a conversation that we all need to be having.”

Added Kravitz, “I don’t know if we’re all supposed to have short hair or straight hair…this is the way we are.”

E!'s longtime correspondent Giuliana Rancic came under fire last month when she said Zendaya's hair, which the young star fashioned into locs for the Oscars red carpet, made her look like she smelled of "patchouli oil and weed." Zendaya responded on social media, and dozens of celebrities came out in support. Co-host Kelly Osbourne even quit over the remark, saying on Twitter, "I don't condone racism."

Speaking about Rancic, Kravitz said, “[She] can just keep her opinions to herself or not get it. It’s not my problem.”

Kravitz also weighed in on whether the incident sparked a needed discussion about Black hair and the way it's perceived in fashion. “I think it’s just about Black women being able to be who they are and people are getting that or not getting that,” she said. “But I don’t think we should have to change the way we look at all depending on what’s in fashion.”
