Madonna Covers Cosmopolitan Magazine

The Material Girl says sexism still exists in today’s society.

Madonna is showing she’s still got it at 56 years old. The provocative singer is gracing four different covers of Cosmopolitan to celebrate its 50th anniversary issue. The first and last time she posed for the magazine was 25 years ago, and while she’s a bit older now (and her hair a lot blonder), she’s dressed a whole lot sexier now than she was back then. In her May 1990 Cosmo cover, Madonna sits fresh-faced in a simple white tank top with low neckline. Now? She’s rocking lacy gloves, tiny tops, fishnet stockings and a bejeweled mask.

When it comes to sexism in the industry, Madonna says not much has changed since she entered the scene.

“We still live in a very sexist society that wants to limit people,” she said. “Since I started, I’ve had people giving me a hard time because they didn’t think you could be sexual or have sexuality or sensuality in your work and be intelligent at the same time. For me, the fight has never ended.”

Still, the singer has been able to forge a career that’s lasted through the decades, and she has no intent on stopping any time soon.

“Popularity comes and goes. You need to know who you are, what you stand for, and why you're here,” she said.

Madonna might have a strong sense of who she is and what she’s about, but she’s been able to grow through the years because she embraces change and is open to teaming up with other artists. Case in point: her collaboration with Kanye West for her latest album Rebel Heart. And while we’ve no doubt that the two probably created some hot beats in the studio, Madonna admitted that when you put together two headstrong musicians, sparks are bound to fly.

"It's a little bit of a bullfight, but we take turns. He knows that he's walking into a room with a person with a strong point of view, and I do too. I listen to what he has to say, take it in, and he listens to what I say and takes it in. We didn't agree on everything, but he has good ideas."
