Mariah Carey Shares Her Best Beauty Tip for Biracial Women

The singer's mixed background will bring something new to the table.

Mariah Carey is getting ready to debut the first item off her M.A.C. Cosmetics collection — a frosty, champagne lipstick named “All I Want” — this holiday season and, in doing promotion for her makeup line, the singer is sharing some of her favorite beauty tips. Carey, who is of Afro-Venezuelan and White Irish descent, will be bringing her biracial background to the table and offering a different perspective on makeup dos and don’ts.

“They have a long history of diverse collaborations, and I’m a different-looking person,” Carey told PopSugar about teaming up with M.A.C. “When I say different, I mean I’m an ambiguous-looking person. Most people have a difficult time being like, ‘What is she?’ This is going to be something that a lot of different people will be able to feel like they can wear, and it will look good on them because I kept that in mind when we were working on it.”
When it comes to selecting the right shade, Carey suggests sticking to your skin tone and finding the colors that work for your particular look.
“Stay closest to your natural color of your skin because we range in color, us biracial women,” she said. “I would just say: be yourself and go with the colors that really work for you. It’s really hard to just lump all biracial people into one category because some of us have light eyes, some of us have dark eyes, some of us are darker and lighter.”
While her new M.A.C. lipstick is a bit of a throwback to the '90s era, Carey said there are few beauty trends she’d revive from her early career days.
“Sometimes in the beginning of my career, people didn’t know how to do my makeup very well,” she said. “I have very unique features and if you don’t know me, you might try to take it one way and it may not work out that well. Back in the day, they would do that heroin-chic look — which is great for someone who doesn’t need more of a structured makeup look — but I was never really a big fan of it. I’m glad we’ve migrated away from that.”
