The debate over improving access to affordable health care is a hot-button campaign issue. President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act in 2010 to the dismay of many Republicans who oppose the law in favor of tort reform, health savings accounts and other more moderate reforms. Critics refer to the measure—dubbed Obamacare—as socialized medicine. The Supreme Court is reviewing whether the government can mandate individual coverage.

Since March 2009, the White House reports that 2.4 million African-American seniors with Medicare have received free preventive services, 410,000 young African-Americans got coverage and 5.5 million African-Americans with private insurance now have coverage for preventive services under the Affordable Care Act.
Although he backed a plan similar to the Obama-backed health care reform bill when he was governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney has promised to repeal it if elected to office. He says he’d allow states to opt out of the federal plan, which he believes is more far-reaching than the health care plan he spearheaded as governor.
