When Leticia James, a New York City Council member, sent out campaign literature about her 2013 race for the city-wide office, the material was as much about next year’s election as it was this year’s.

James, a candidate for New York’s second highest office of Public Advocate, urged voters to take a few minutes to call or go online to find their polling places. She pointed out that boards of elections in various cities may have changed the locations where voters can cast ballots.

“I have a neighbor who had not voted in three years, and she got a notice that she might not be on the rolls,” James said. “She called and discovered that she was still registered and found out where her polling place was.”

She added, “There is a lot of confusion out there. Often there have been changes in the location of polling places in different cities. People should call or go online to make sure they know where they are supposed to vote.”

Voters should call their local election offices before the Nov. 6 election to ensure that they have accurate information.

One source of information is a website maintained by the League of Women Voters Education Fund called Vote 411. It enables voters to enter the address where they are registered and get information on polling places.

In addition, boards of election offices in most states maintain websites where voters can get information on how to find polling places.
