Staying Persistent

In 1974, Clinton lost his campaign for Congress in Arkansas's 3rd District. Two years later, he was elected Arkansas attorney general and won the governorship in 1978. He lost his bid for a second term, but regained office four years later and served as governor until he defeated George H.W. Bush in the 1992 presidential election.
