Murder of South African Lesbian Labeled a Hate Crime
Lesbians in the nation are targeted for “corrective rape.”
Last month’s brutal murder of a lesbian activist in South Africa has been labeled a hate crime by U.S.-based Human Rights Watch.
The organization is demanding that authorities in the nation try harder to arrest those connected to the April rape and murder of Noxolo Nogwaza, who was stabbed and stoned following a disturbance at a bar, the BBC reports.
While homosexuality is legal in the nation (unlike in some of its African counterparts), many gays and lesbians are targeted for attacks. In particular, attackers sometimes go after lesbian women for what some call “corrective rape.”
