On Nov. 16, 2001, 18-year-old Nigerian model and student Agbani Darego became the first woman from sub-Saharan Africa to win the Miss World crown.

On Nov. 16, 2001, 18-year-old Nigerian model and student Agbani Darego became the first woman from sub-Saharan Africa to win the Miss World crown.

After winning the title, Darego went on to snag prestigious modeling contracts with major agencies and companies in the U.S. and U.K. such as beauty and cosmetics brand L’Oreal.

In 2012, Darego graduated from New York University with a degree in psychology. She currently works with Ford Models in New York City.
