A childcare worker at an orphanage in South Africa has been arrested on suspicion of poisoning 20 children in her care.

Managers at the Malerato Centre for Hope in Mamlodi township, on the outskirts of Pretoria, were alerted when the children complained of feeling unwell.

The employee, a 35-year-old woman, is alleged to have given the children a “white powder” with their lunch following a dispute with the Centre’s management.
The Malerato Centre accommodates 42 HIV/AIDS orphans who have been abandoned or whose parents have died from the virus.
