El Chapo is on the loose.
Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin Guzman, commonly known as El Chapo, broke out of maximum securty prison again, Mexico's National Security Commission confirmed on Sunday (July 12). Guzman reportedly escaped through a tunnel found under his cell, that stretches one mile long. A massive manhunt is in place to find him, and authorities have even closed down nearby Toluca International Airport.
This is the second time the Sinaloa cartel boss has escaped max, previously leaving a facility in 2001 through a laundry cart. He wouldn't be caught again until 2014, during which time he expanded his heroin cartel into a global operation that supplies most of the United States with the drug. He is wanted here on multiple federal drug trafficking and organized crime charges.
In Mexico, the diminutive kingpin — his 5'6" frame gave him his nickname, which means "Shorty," — became a living legend whose life story became the topic of best-selling books and the subject of adoring songs known as narcocorridos.
