Why is Southern Sudan Going to Be Independent?

In accordance with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed in 2005, a referendum was held in January 2011 giving those living in southern Sudan the option of either staying unified with Sudan or separation. Over 97 percent of eligible citizens voted overwhelmingly (98.83 percent) to leave Sudan.
