How Did All of This Start?

Syria’s popular uprising began in March 2011 as a series of rallies called for an end to government corruption and the demand for widespread reforms. However, as many demonstrations were met with violence, the opposition’s message switched to one favoring the complete removal of President Bashar al-Assad, who has been in power for the past 11 years.
