On the Big Screen

The film The Sapphires, about an Aboriginal girl group facing the racism of the 1960s, was released in 2012 to critical acclaim in Australia. It earned 14 million Australian dollars ($14.6 million in U.S. currency) in nine weeks. The film featured a nearly all-Aboriginal cast and many said the movie’s success indicated a shift among Australia’s audiences.
