Mo Ibrahim, United Kingdom — $1.1 billion

The Sudanese-born billionaire found his way on to the list after selling Celtel, the mobile phone company he founded, in 2005 for $3.4 billion. Ibrahim pocketed $1.4 billion from the deal and now he spends his time donating money and investing in Africa.

In 2007, he established the Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership which gives $5 million to African heads of state for good democratic governance.
