In July 2010, hundreds of Argentinians protested a bill legalizing same-sex marriage after the Senate narrowly approved the law, which made Argentina the first Latin American nation to permit gay couples to marry. “The vote came despite a lot of pressure” from the Catholic Church, sociologist Fortunato Mallimaci told New York Times. “In the past, this would have influenced the votes of the senators. But not now.”
