U.S. Supreme Court Hears Nigeria-Shell Rights Case

The U.S. Supreme Court began hearing arguments in the lawsuit accusing Royal Dutch Shell of human rights abuse in Nigeria, a case that could make corporations liable for acts of torture or genocide overseas.

The plaintiffs allege that Shell and other firms enlisted the government to help  suppress local resistance to oil exploration in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region in the 1990s.
