Zimbabwe First Lady Sues Paper Over Diamonds Story

HARARE, Zimbabwe – The publisher of an independent newspaper says Zimbabwe's first lady is suing for $15 million over a story citing WikiLeaks cables that allege her involvement in illegal diamond deals.

Raphael Khumalo, chief executive at the Zimbabwe Standard Sunday weekly, said Thursday court documents were served by attorneys representing President Robert Mugabe's wife, Grace.

The newspaper has faced several lawsuits over its reporting. Its editor was arrested last month over reports relating to military recruitment.

Grace Mugabe, 45, married the president, 86, a decade ago. She says the story damages her reputation as "mother of the nation.

The leaked cable, written by the former U.S. ambassador to Zimbabwe, says she "reaped tremendous profits" from corruption-plagued diamond fields.
