Some of these athletes include: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Tom McHale, who died in 2008 of an apparent drug overdose at the age of 45; the Philadelphia Eagles’ Andre Waters, who committed suicide at age 44; Ollie Matson, who played 14 NFL seasons starting 1950s, died of dementia in 2011; Pro Football Hall of Famer John Mackey, who suffered from dementia before dying at 69; and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offensive lineman Terry Long, who committed suicide by drinking antifreeze in 2005.
