During her visit to The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Kerry Washington admitted that it wasn't easy playing a slave in Quentin Tarantino's upcoming Western-style flick Django Unchained. The actress said that the brutally honest film really depicts the rough treatment of slaves during that era and doesn't romanticize the relationship between slave and slave owner as other films have done.
"It was really hard to do," Washington said. "I kept telling Quentin that I was going to send him my extra therapy bills because it was really hard on Jamie and I both. That actually made us feel extra grateful for anybody that was able to survive it because we barely survived it for pretend for the eight months we were filming."
Not only did Washington and her on-screen husband, played by Jamie Foxx, get called the N-word and other racial slurs during filming, but they were whipped as well.
"I did [get hit with a whip]. We were filming on a slave plantation, so it was an archeology site that you knew that these awful crimes against humanity had actually happened. It was a stunt whip but the guys were very reluctant to do it but I thought we are here and we should honor the story that we're telling and honor the people who lived through this horrible tragedy and try to be as real as possible."
Sounds like the movie could be tough to sit through and watch. Will you be catching Django Unchained when it's released on Christmas Day?
