Quvenzhané Wallis joined First Lady Michelle Obama and her Beasts of the Southern Wild cast members for a Black History Month workshop at the White House on Wednesday. The nine-year-old actress spoke with 80 middle and high school students from the Washington, D.C., and New Orleans area to talk about her experience making the film and how they can apply some of the hopeful themes into their own lives.

The first lady said Beasts makes viewers "think deeply about the people we love in our lives who make us who we are" and shows the strength of communities and the power they give others to overcome obstacles.

The interactive workshop took place in the White House's State Dining Room and was moderated by the President's Committee on Arts and Humanities Executive Director Rachel Goslins.

Wallis is also set to attend the Essence Black Women in Hollywood luncheon Feb. 21, where she will be honored with the Breakthrough Performance Award, before heading to the Academy Awards ceremony on Feb. 24.
