Solange Knowles visited the Hot 97 station on Wednesday to chat with host Angie Martinez about her childhood, disciplining her 9-year-old son Julez and why their recent part-time move to New Orleans was a good choice for the family.
"I feel like moving to New Orleans and putting him in school there was a good move in keeping him humble. He's around a lot of sweet, nice normal kids. And also around kids who get disciplined," she said before adding that she's not afraid to dish out a spanking when he needs it.
"If he gets completely out of line, I do the three steps. One is the look and talk. Two is taking away something of value to him. Three, you need your butt popped. You don't have to do it often, like twice or three times a year. And he remembers it."
She also mentioned why it's a good spot for aunty Beyoncé and uncle Jay Z to pop in for a visit with baby Blue — because they won't get attacked by star-struck fans while out and about.
"Even when they were there for Super Bowl, we went out to eat a lot and we stayed under the radar. People from New Orleans are extremely prideful. Even if they are kinda curious, they won't let you know," said Solange.
Solange also dished about the time she used the "Knowles" card to help fend off a bully by calling on her big sis along with Destiny's Child member Kelly Rowland to scare him.
"When I was in 7th or 8th grade, I used the card because there was this one kid who was so obnoxious and was constantly kinda bullying and doing the most," she said. "My mom came on a trip as a chaperone and called her the B-word. This kid was out of control. I wrote petitions to get this kid named Brandon out of school. So one day, and 'No No No Part 2' had just come out, I did say my sister is gonna come here and you're going to be really surprised who she is. I kept telling my sister and Kelly [Rowland], 'You gotta come check this kid.' Of course he wasn't paying any attention to what I had to say. They pulled up and I would never forget the face Brandon made. They were coming to beat him up, he was sick. It was Destiny's Child coming to beat him up. I loved it so much."
