Shonda Rhimes is being honored by the Directors Guild of America for being such a rock star when it comes to presenting diversity in her television projects. The screenwriter-director-producer who's created hits such as Grey's Anatomy and Scandal and her business partner Betsy Beers are being awarded the 2014 Diversity Award for providing women and minorities with wonderful job opportunities. And it's no minor achievement as the award has only been presented four times in the DGA's 66-year history.

"In the decade that Shonda and Betsy have been creating and producing buzzworthy television, their record of diverse hiring has been consistently outstanding at a time when very few television series meet that standard," explained DGA president Paris Barclay. "As a result, they have impacted the careers of dozens of women and minorities — they've made stars not only in front of, but behind the camera as well."

Indeed, Rhimes' series have presented characters of all races, religions, sexual preferences and interracial relationships to truly represent what the world actually looks like.

"It has always been important that the world created in my shows look like the actual world that we live in," Rhimes said. "I am truly honored to be receiving this prestigious award and am thankful for all of the work that the DGA does to promote diversity in our industry."

Rhimes and Beers will be honored January 25, 2014 at the 66th Annual DGA Awards.
