Audra McDonald Opens Up About Past Suicide Attempt

The singer-actress shares how she tried to slit her wrists in college.

Audra McDonald is an amazing singer-actress with so much to give (and six Tony Awards under her belt), but it took her a while to discover her own gifts. In a recent interview with ABC's Popcorn With Peter Travers, the 44-year-old revealed that she went through a deep depression while she was in college and went so far as to attempt suicide.

"When I was at Juilliard, I had a suicide attempt. I tried to slit my wrist," McDonald said before adding that she was able to find help through her school's support system.

"When someone is suicidal, one of the first things you have to do is to protect them from themselves," she explained. "[Juilliard] had a mental health facilitator there, a therapist there and they checked me into a mental health hospital where I was for a month and got me the help I needed."

McDonald also credits antidepressants and the career opportunities that started rolling in as reasons for her successful rehabilitation.
