Gabrielle Union Chats About Finding Funny Roles in Hollywood

“There’s not a lot of smart comedies where they want a Black woman," Union says.

We’ve known for a long time that Gabrielle Union has the chops to pull off serious on-screen characters as well as comedic roles and after appearing in the film Top Five, co-star Chris Rock touted Union’s comedic prowess in his interviews. During a recent sit-down with Angie Martinez, the actress opened up about how hard it is for Black women to find great roles in funny films.

“There’s not a lot of smart comedies where they want a Black woman. They want us shucking and jivin’ and cooning. That’s where they’re most comfortable having a Black woman,” the Being Mary Jane star said. “So to get a role like Tina Fey — smart, edgy, more cerebral humor…no, they’re going to get Tina Fey. They’re going to get Amy Poehler, they’re going to get Rashida Jones…that crew. So I just got to get invited to Judd Apatow’s house, and I feel like once I get in there hopefully I’ll make myself at home.”

Martinez said she doesn’t believe Union has really gone as far as she’s capable of in flexing her funny muscles, and Union agreed.
