After a difficult year battling a rare form of brain cancer, Meechy Monroe is on the mend and taking nothing for granted. In an open letter posted to a fundraising page for her medical expenses, the natural hair and beauty blogger updated her followers on Wednesday with the good news: her cancer is in remission.
Last April, she suddenly began experiencing slurred speech, an onset of a communication disorder known as aphasia, and then suffered the first of three stokes. Doctors soon diagnosed her with a rare sarcoma, a vascular cancerous tumor, in her brain. She would undergo two brain surgeries and a battery of special x-ray tests along her path towards regaining health.
“And here I am...in REMISSION a year later being able to tell the story through the grace and mercy of God! I really can't say thank you enough to my Lord. Even when I'm writing all of this I am crying because the joy I feel in my heart...it could never be explained. I now have zero activity for tumor re-growth, improved speech, re-gained strength in my right hand, clearer thoughts, NO Headaches, NO Memory loss, an appreciation for life and faith that is infallible!!! Tell me my God isn't REAL!!!” she wrote.
She said prayer, inspirational music and daily visits from friends and family, along with well wishes from her online supporters, kept her hopeful about beating the cancer. With the disease behind her, she’s now focused on making the best of her “second chance” at life.
“I will start to get my life back on track and partake in things that once were second nature. I'm still healing and re-gaining what was once taken away. With practice and hard work I can do anything, believe that. I also plan on acting on my purpose in this life, God has granted me a second chance for a reason. I'm going to make the most of it!”
