Robin Roberts Covers WebMD Magazine

She reveals scary moment she felt herself “slipping away.”

Robin Roberts is currently gracing the cover of WebMD magazine and in it, the Good Morning America host opened up about her bone marrow transplant and how she felt herself “slipping away” during her grueling recovery from a rare blood and bone marrow disease. Roberts, who was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome in 2012, found a match in her sister, Sally-Ann, but afterwards faced a long road before her return to television.

“One night post-transplant I was convinced I was slipping away and then I heard a voice saying my name over and over again. There was a nurse named Jenny, pleading with me not to slip away. I don’t know what would have happened if she wasn’t there,” Roberts recalled.

Roberts was upfront about her battles, first with her breast cancer in 2007 and later on when she was diagnosed with the bone marrow disease doctors believe was caused by her cancer treatment. Viewers showered her with support and she later received the 2012 Peabody Award as well as the Arthur Ashe Courage Award during the 2013 ESPYs for her work in bringing awareness to her illness and inspiring the public to become bone marrow donors.

“They didn’t forget about me, and you don’t take that for granted. There isn’t a day that someone hasn’t said, ‘I prayed for you,’” Roberts told WebMD about her support system.

"When I made the announcement about my disease, I knew there was going to be an outcry, and I was partnered with Be the Match to channel that," she said. "When you're going through a mess, find the message in it not just for yourself, but for other people."
