Margaret Avery Shares Her Love Advice

"Make sure you're not in love with being in love," she says.

Margaret Avery graced us with her presence at last weekend’s BET Awards and during her strut down the red carpet, MadameNoire stopped the Being Mary Jane star to ask her about relationships. Being that Avery plays mama to Gabrielle Union's titular character on the show, it was fitting that she’d have some words of wisdom to share with women struggling to fight off that nagging “Why am I still single?” question.

“Well I think in the beginning I didn’t want to get married because I was trying to build a career, studying, acting and then working. So you don’t think about it,” Avery said when asked if she ever felt that pressure in her youth. “But then there’s a time when you do go like, 'Hey, what kind of mother will I be?’ And you start getting that little itch.”

For those single ladies out there who are starting to ask themselves that very question, Avery urges that you check where your motivations form and to proceed with caution.

“What I would advise everyone is just make sure that you’re not in love with being in love. Make that decision with a wise, wise mind because marriage is forever and it affects our children when it doesn’t work out,” she suggested. “I would just say, you know, date a long time. And look at that man’s friends and look at how he treats his mom.”
