Kerry Washington is here to give all new moms a bit of a reality check: it’s OK if you’re in no hurry to get your pre-baby body back. In her cover story for Self, the Scandal star said she’s relieved herself of any pressures to lose all the weight she gained during her pregnancy last year.
“A few weeks ago, my manager asked: ‘Do you feel like you’re back? I feel like you’re back,’” Washington said. “She meant it as a total compliment, but we had this great conversation where I was like, ‘You know what? I try really hard not to use that language, because it’s not about going backward in life.’ I’ve been really focused on not being ‘back’ to anything, but being the best version of myself right now. My body is the site of a miracle now. I don’t want to be pre-miracle.”
That’s not to say that the 38-year-old’s body doesn’t look amazing, and she flaunts it beautifully in a sports bra and leotard for the magazine’s September issue. She might not be dying to get back to her “pre-miracle” days, but she’s not about to fall off track with staying healthy. Washington says she squeezes in her workouts first thing in the morning so that she has time to spend with husband Nnamdi Asomugha and daughter Isabelle.
“I try to get it in so I can be back with my kid early,” she said. “I have to take care of myself in order to live life the way I want to. It’s important to have rest days. But in the long run, if I don’t work out for, like, three days, I feel worse, not better.”
Her go-to exercise has been Pilates, which Washington has done with her trainer two to six times a week for the past five years.
“There are a lot of forms of exercise where you have to leave yourself out of the room while you force yourself to do this thing,” she said. “With Pilates, I get to bring my true self. I cry, I laugh. I get to go: Where is my body today? What do I need today? How can I take care of myself and push myself past my comfort zone? How can I be both loving and challenging?”
