Not only is Nicki Minaj the only female MC making noise on the charts, she just might be the most controversial rapper in years. Her debut album doesn't come out until November, but she's already a ubiquitous presence, winning awards and performing on TV. Everyone has an opinion on whether she has what it takes to move beyond novelty to longevity.
Although Minaj had been trying to do her thing for years on the New York scene, it wasn't until she got down with Lil Wayne's Young Money in '09 that her life began to change. Yes, she's borrowed from MCs like Lil Kim and Foxy Brown, but Missy Elliot is no doubt her biggest influence. It's Nicki's animated verses that have brought her the most attention—people either love 'em or hate 'em. Since Missy is the most successful female MC ever, consider it Nicki's best chess move. Miss Minaj doesn't want to just play the game, she wants to win. And so far, it looks like winning is exactly what she's doing. Like Nicki said, “Who else you know made a million off a mixtape?”
The question is, does she deserve all this attention or do you want her to go away?
