Over the weekend, the hip-hop community learned that DJ Kool Herc, the man credited as the founder of hip-hop, was hospitalized for a serious medical condition. Though his medical condition has not yet been revealed, many in the hip-hop community took to Twitter to pray for his recovery. In addition to asking for prayers, some supporters even asked for money, as DJ Kool Herc does not have health insurance and is in need of surgery.

DJ Premier took to his blog, urging fans to make donations to Kool Herc via Paypal or regular mail. Donations can be sent to Kool Herc @ Kool Herc Productions, P.O. Box 20472 Huntington Station, NY 11746.

And Premier wasn't the only one to lend a helping hand. DJ Tony Touch announced via twitter that he would host a benefit on Tuesday at Sutra in New York City.

Bronx-bred Kool Herc is credited with inventing the "break-beat," where he would take two of the same records, play each of them on a set of turntables, and isolate the break by repeatedly playing them one after the other. This would later become the foundation to the beats that birthed hip-hop.
