Royce Da 5'9 is in the best position of his career. The Detroit MC is one-fourth of the critically-acclaimed rap collective Slaughterhouse that recently signed to Eminem's Shady Records. But he isn't letting his solo career take a back seat, as the rapper has just released the first single from his upcoming Success Is Certain album, titled "Writer's Block." The song, which features Em, is generating a major buzz on the internet.
"I'm happy to be in this position," Royce tells BET.com. "My last album was all about beats and rhymes. It was straight up about the artform. This time, I'm focusing more on content."
Royce says Success Is Certain is the exact opposite of Death Is Certain, his second album released in 2004. "On that album, I spoke about pain and being angry. Now, I'm not angry. I'm speaking on triumphs, overcoming obstacles, jumping over hurdles and breaking down boundaries and barriers."
As for subject matter, Royce, who goes by the moniker "Nickel," says the subject matter covered on this project will be very personal. On the Alchemist-produced "I Ain't Coming Down," Royce sends out a message to the city of Detroit. "For a long time, I felt like it was real popular to not like me in Detroit. It seems like I used to rub people the wrong way. I feel proud of myself to have turned that around."
Royce is currently in the studio putting the finishing touches on the album, scheduled to drop on July 26.
