Frank Ocean is starting out the new year much like he ended the last: on a high note. The 24-year-old singer-songwriter was recently named runner up on the BBC's Sound of 2012 list, which highlights emerging artists poised to make their mark on the year ahead. In an interview, Ocean described his approach to crafting his debut album, due this spring from Def Jam.
"It’s about the stories," he said. "If I write 14 stories that I love, then the next step is to get the environment of music around it to best envelop the story and all kinds of sonic goodness — sonic goodies.”
Ocean said his goal for the project was to take a snapshot of this moment in his life.
"It succinctly defines me as an artist for where I am right now and that was the aim, just to make something that represents where you are at that time," he said.
The New Orleans native, who released the free album Nostalgia, ULTRA last year and appeared on Jay-Z and Kanye West's Watch the Throne, was recently named GQ's 2011 "Rookie of the Year."
