The legendary producer wants to put recent dispute with rapper to rest.
The controversy between Pete Rock and Lupe Fiasco over his "T.R.O.Y."-sampling new single is still simmering after it's explosion last week, when Lupe responded to Pete Rock's heated comments on the situation with an on-air tirade of his own. Addressing Lupe's remarks and adding more context to the issue, Pete Rock sat down on the couch recently with Sway for MTV News.
In the interview, Pete said that although he had given "a conditional yes" to Atlantic Records to use the song, he had expected Lupe and his crew to involve him in the recording process.
"I thought from that point I would be involved with Lupe and be in the studio tweaking the beat and stuff. But I never heard from the record label again," he said.
Pete said the next time he heard about the song it was being played on the radio. Hearing the sample put him in an emotional state, and that's when he lashed out against the track's producers on Twitter.
"I'm not flattered @ all. Dat s--t is wack, and the producer should be ashamed of his f---in self. Smh," he wrote at the time.
In his interview with Sway, Rock admitted that he probably went too far. "I let my emotions get the best of me," he said.
Although the legendary producer acknowledged that "T.R.O.Y." has been sampled by others in the past, he said in those instances it was for mixtapes that were beyond his reach. For the song to be sampled in the lead single for an LP from a mainstream artist, Pete said he would want to be involved.
Last week, Rock put out a statement saying he had spoken with Lupe on the phone and they had worked out their issues. But that statement was quickly contradicted when Lupe called in to Sway's Shade 45 radio show livid that Rock hadn't retracted his Twitter comments in full.
"Pete what's wrong with you?!" he shouted. "Going off like that? We tryin' to pay homage to you. If there's anybody in the industry that's gonna hold you down more than anybody, it's Lupe!"
Speaking to Sway, Pete said he was surprised by Lupe's comments, but still hoped the two could move forward.
"I'm a fan of Lupe's — 'Paris, Tokyo,' 'Kick, Push,' I listen to that stuff," he said, later concluding, "Hopefully one day we can both get over this hump."
