"Females deserve the ultimate respect at all times.”
Lil Wayne shocked thousands of fans and, according to Nicki Minaj, altered hip hop history when he made the last-minute decision to pull the plug on the Young Money star's headlining set at Hot 97's Summer Jam earlier this month. Speaking out about the controversial decision for the first time, Wayne tells MTV News that the radio station simply broke a cardinal rule of his: Never mistreat a lady.
"The way I look at it is that's a female; first and foremost, Nicki Minaj is a female," Weezy said. "I don't know what anyone else believes, but I believe females deserve the ultimate respect at all times no matter, when or where or how."
The Young Money captain said he received a call from Minaj on the day of the festival where she informed him that she felt disrespected by now-infamous remarks by DJ Peter Rosenberg. While introducing an earlier set by Kendrick Lamar, Rosenberg had called her single "Starships" "bulls--t" and alleged that she wasn't "real hip hop."
"As soon as she called me and told me she felt disrespected, I just declined everything," Wayne said. "I pulled her from the show because ... no person that works with me will be disrespected in my presence as long as I'm on this planet."
Since the incident, Minaj has stood by Weezy's executive decision to pull all Young Money acts from the festival. In a subsequent interview on Hot 97 with Funkmaster Flex, she made similar remarks about the imperative of respect.
“When you want our team to come to your show, treat us with respect. And that’s all we’re asking. We’re not asking for any special treatment. Just respect," she said. "And I’m very proud of my team, and the way they stood behind me , and I’m very happy to show my female fans in that audience, and even my gay fans in that audience, when I’m coming to your home, respect me. It’s no longer comedy. Wayne doesn’t take me as a joke.”
Minaj has since promised a free show for her fans in New York to make up for the absence. In her place, Nas and Lauryn Hill performed an impromptu headlining set that went on to make history of its own.
