Soul crooner Meshell Ndegeocello is making her 10th studio album a tribute to the legendary Nina Simone. The project has been given a French title, Pour Une Ame Souveraine, which translates to "for a sovereign soul." The jazz queen lived in France for some time before she passed away from breast cancer in 2003.

Ndegeocello will remake several of Nina’s classics, including “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” “Feelin’ Good,” “Four Women” and “See Line Woman.” There will be powerful guest features from Lizz Wright, Sinead O’Connor, Tracy Wannomae, Toshi Reagon, Valerie June and Cody ChesnuTT. As Meshell describes the album, it’s “a dedication to Nina Simone and her incredible influence but it is also a dedication to the single, interior life we all experience.”

The ten-time Grammy Award nominee has been credited as a leader of the neo-soul movement, and her music has been featured in classic films such as Love & Basketball, Love Jones and How Stella Got Her Groove Back. She is currently on tour in the United States.
