Talib Kweli is gearing up for the release of his new album, Prisoner of Consciousness. Set to drop in October, the LP has more features than Kweli has ever done before, including appearances by Kendrick Lamar, Melanie Fiona, Miguel and Busta Rhymes. In a recent video interview with The Sermon's Domain, the Brooklyn rapper discussed his love for collaborations and the details of his next album.
“This album has more features than any album I’ve ever put out, but I don’t want that to take away from the fact that this is my album. I’ve always been into features, I’ve always been into collaborations – with Mos Def, with Hi-Tek, with Madlib, with Res – I always do a new group,” said the hip hop artist.
The son of an English professor and a college administrator, the "conscious" lyricist also discussed the content of his new LP, how he approached his writing and what his fans can expect while listening.
“Songs that are more focused on life and what people are going through and dealing with the social conditions in that way as opposed to speaking directly to the social conditions. That’s what I’m really trying to do with this album,” he revealed.
The Black Star MC has released five solo albums and will drop a mixtape, Attack the Block, featuring Rah Digga, Black Thought and Ryan Leslie, before Prisoner of Consciousness is released. His most recent album, Gutter Rainbows, experienced moderate sales success, with 19,000 copies sold in the U.S. during its first week.
