Nelly on Texas Drug Bust: I Wouldn’t Jeopardize My Career

Rapper grants first interview since drugs were seized on his tour bus.

Nelly had a dramatic run-in with police last week after his tour bus was stopped in Texas and drug-sniffing dogs found large quantities of heroin and marijuana on board. The "Country Grammar" rapper denied any knowledge of the illicit substances, and one of his associates, Brian Keith Jones, came forward and accepted responsibility for the drugs. In a recent interview with V-103 radio's Kenny Burns (as picked up by HipHopDX), Nelly spoke on the situation for the first time.
“Certain stuff we can say and certain stuff you can’t say until all that is cleared,” he said. ”We got pulled over and things were noticed as far as K-9 abilities and things went in stages from there. It was kind of wild…When they asked, ‘Whose is this,’ I can tell you who it ain’t.”
Nelly and the six other occupants of the bus were detained while police performed the raid. Thirty-six bags of heroin and 10 pounds of marijuana were discovered in addition to a loaded pistol.
"It is my understanding a member of my staff made an unfortunate decision to bring unlawful materials onto our tour bus that resulted in his arrest this morning," Nelly said of Jones in a subsequent statement last week. "Neither I nor anyone else on the tour bus was aware of his decision to bring these on board. Law enforcement officials did not press charges against anyone other than that individual."
In his V-103 interview, the diamond-selling rapper recounted what was going through his head as the raid went down.

"Everything happened so fast. It's one of those situations where you’re squinting your eyes like, Is this really happening?…There was no way I would jeopardize what Nelly has built for the last 14-15 years being in the situation I was accused."
The bust took place in Sierra Blanca, TX, where Snoop Dogg, Willie Nelson and Fiona Apple have all also recently been stopped for drug possession.
