The singer-director has high aspirations for his creativity.
Since the "Thriller" days of Michael Jackson, music videos have become more than just song and dance. Chris Brown has gradually been transforming his music videos into miniature movies with high production values and storylines. In a rare and recent interview granted to Prestige Hong Kong, the performer opened up about his music video aspirations and the creative process of directing.
"Whenever you're sleeping, you have that dream or that nightmare and that's your video. That's how I kind of interpret it. Or whatever I see when I hear the music, whatever vision I see, I put it right onto paper and put it out on the video," explained the music star. "Like the video for 'Don't Judge Me' — it was me going into a space ship. Not to be arrogant when I say it, but I want to be the Steven Spielberg of music videos, to be innovative and young, not to put a bar on it just because of budgetary issues or certain capabilities."
Citing MJ as one of his inspirations along with James Brown and Fred Astaire, the singer and rising director has been honing his music video production skills. Last month, he directed rock band U.G.L.Y.'s controversial music video for "RED" and continues to maintain creative control over his own music videos. Combining his talents for the visual arts, love for Broadway theater and undeniable music skills, Brown wants to push the edge for music videos and raise the bar for other music artists' visual expression.
