After months of secrecy surrounding his forthcoming album, Kanye West unveiled new music during his performance at the Met Gala in New York City last night. Sliding into a sparkly version of his Givenchy pleated kilt, leggings, and a mask at one point, the 35-year-old rocked the "punk" themed-event, debuting his "I Am a God" track by screaming the title words repeatedly.
Just so there'd be no surprises, Yeezy made his intentions clear by announcing that he was "only singing new stuff." In an audience full of A-listers from the music world and beyond (including Beyoncé, Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicki Minaj, Kerry Washington and Jennifer Lopez), the primal yells may have been a little extreme, but West has been perfecting his growl for a while now. He first showcased the screech during a show in Abu Dhabi, where the G.O.O.D. music front man donned a white straight jacket and mask.
Luckily, the Met gig wasn't all about screaming. Ye also performed "Clique," and another new joint with the lyrics "I got hope, I got a chance, cause baby, you're awesome," which sounds like it was inspired by Kim Kardashian. The couple showed up to the fashion extravaganza together, wearing Givenchy from head to toe.
