Of all the rap responses to his "Control" verses, there was one that stood out to Kendrick Lamar. K. Dot called into New York's Hot 97 this morning for an in-depth talk with Peter Rosenberg about the now infamous rap verse. He also named his favorite of the rebuttal bunch. "A lotta people had different approaches," he explained pointing out King Los, Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz and Papoose among his favorites.
"They were stating their facts. Joe had the facts in his verse, Papoose had the comical joint, Los was flipping his words, you know putting that spunk on it. I think he had the killer thing."
A West Coaster crowning himself the "king of New York" ruffled some feathers, but backlash wasn't a concern. In fact, although Los won the Compton rapper's praise for putting out the best response, it was Kevin Hart (aka Chocolate Droppa) who delivered the most well-timed bars. "He made light of the situation, because at the time it became a little oversaturated….it becomes so corny after a while you need to put that light, that touch back on it."
Above all else, the TDE rapper wanted the main takeaway from the verse to reflect his influence on others, but also to better his own craft. "My whole thing is to inspire, to better people, to better myself forever in this thing that we call rap, this thing that we call hip hop."
