"It's on Again" earns its name from the superhero flick's full title, and features vocals from Keys, next to Lamar's rhymes. Both are co-writers, alongside veteran film composer Hans Zimmer and production from Pharrell.
Keys called the work a "powerful collaboration," in a statement. "This is the next chapter in the Spider-Man legacy and we really feel ‘It’s on Again’ captures the experience, the story — and most importantly — the meaning behind the film, which is that we all have the potential to be extraordinary," said the 32-year-old. "There’s a little bit of a superhero in all of us.”
Zimmer's lengthy resume of scores includes Inception, Gladiator, Batman Returns, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. The award-winning composer described working with Lamar, Keys and Pharrell as different from his typical method. "We did the opposite of what composers usually do — we wrote songs, and from the songs came the themes," he explained. "We embraced a rock 'n' roll ethos on this movie, and it paid off."
Pharrell, who's been floating on the success of "Happy," his Oscar-nominated song from the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack, said it was an "exciting" experience, working with Zimmer. "When I was making the song," he added, "I knew Alicia and Kendrick had to be on it. They take the song to a whole new level."
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 soundtrack is out April 22 and the film is slated for release May 2.
