Singer joins the bill to celebrate the release of the Godfather of Soul's biopic, Get on Up.
Only a special occasion can get D'Angelo to the stage. The reclusive crooner will pay homage to James Brown this summer as a featured performer at a concert being held in tribute to the Godfather of Soul and to celebrate the release of the new Brown biopic, Get on Up, starring Chadwick Boseman and Jill Scott.
According to Billboard, D'Angelo is the latest special guest announced. Aloe Blacc and renowned African singer Angélique Kidjo will also perform at the event, scheduled for Aug. 13 at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles as part of the venue's Jazz at the Bowl series.
Mr. "How Does It Feel?" and Aloe Blacc are also rumored additions to a neo-soul festival being held in Australia in October. The shows, both stateside and Down Under, will be the latest in what have become rare D'Angelo sightings since, at least, the release of his last LP in 2008, a compilation album, The Best So Far...
Word is, after all these years, the Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter has another album in the works at his new label home, RCA Records.
Meanwhile, the feature flick about the legendary soul singer also stars Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Tika Sumpter. It will be released on Aug. 1 via Universal Studios.
