Trio to drop only 100 copies of an LP featuring J. Dilla instrumentals.
De La Soul will release limited edition vinyls of Smell The DaI.S.Y. starting Friday (April 18), the group announced on its official website.
In honor of Easter and Record Store Day, both celebrated this weekend, the hip hop trio has put together its own version of an easter egg hunt. Only 100 copies of the album are available, and will be hidden at different record stores in the U.S., U.K. and Canada.
The album will feature full instrumentals produced entirely by the late J. Dilla. "We decided to release an all instrumental version of Smell The DaI.S.Y. to give people the experience of a J Dilla beat tape that we were so lucky to receive," the group said in a statement from their website. "These beat tapes were the springboard that generated creation and generated inspiration for us."
The special edition vinyls are meant to mimic the "limited amount of beat tapes that Dilla would send out to artists like A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Common, Mos Def, Busta and De La," the statement added.
