Rihanna’s voice won’t be heard by NFL fans watching the Baltimore Ravens/Pittsburgh Steelers game tonight (Sept. 11). CBS was set to use the chorus of "Run This Town,” which Rihanna sings, during the Thursday night lineup, but in the wake of the Ray Rice domestic abuse case, TMZ reports.
“We thought journalistically and from a tone standpoint, we needed to have the appropriate tone coverage,” said Sean McManus, chairman of CBS Sports.
Although the network never mentioned the detail, Rih Rih’s past with domestic violence, may have played a roll in the decision to pull the music. The Grammy-winning single, found on Jay Z’s Blueprint 3 album, also features Kanye West. The track was to be played during a segment with Don Cheadle, and will now be replaced with a discussion about NFL commissioner Robert Goodell’s remarks on the Rice incident.
New video of Rice’s knocking his now wife out cold, was released by TMZ at the top of the week. NFL execs maintain that they had not reviewed footage of Rice punching then fianceé, Janay Palmer, until the website ran the footage. However, a source told the Associated Press that the NFL had the video five months ago.
Tonight will be the first game that the Ravens will play since Rice was cut from the team and suspended from the league.
