Kendrick Lamar's 'King Kunta'

Pharrell and HBO exec. rave about K. Dot's top-secret track, rumored to be his new single.

The next single off Kendrick Lamar’s new album could be a track called “King Kunta,” Complex reports. So far the super-secret song has been raved about by Pharell and Scott Vener, the latter of whom worked as music supervisor for HBO’s Entourage and How to Make It in America

Vener tweeted about K. Dot’s latest yesterday (Oct. 29). @kendricklamar x @SounwaveTDE got a new song called 'King Kunta' #Compton,” he wrote. “After @Pharrell heard it. The first thing he said ‘that song is so unapologetically black and AMAZING’ #KingKunta.”

With just a single listen, Vener was clearly blown away by the TDE MC's new music. He compared the flow to James Brown's 1973 song "Payback" in that it's both conversational, and powerful. “I only got to hear it once. usually I listen to the beat then digest the lyrics the 2nd time around but… f--k…If we can’t get @kendricklamar a Grammy lets get him an Oscar #KingKunta.”

Beyond Vener’s tweets, nothing else is known about “King Kunta,” but the title alone suggests that Lamar will be making a bold and possibly unconventional statement, as he did with “i,” the first single off the upcoming LP.

If "King Kunta" is in fact the next, then the roll out is similar. "i" was leaked on Twitter, without official confirmation from Lamar himself.
