RZA: I Spent $500k Making the New Wu-Tang Clan Album

Bobby Digital is paying out of pocket to bring fans A Better Tomorrow.

The cost of making the new Wu-Tang Clan album has gotten pretty pricey, and RZA is footing the bill. Bobby Digital says that he spent roughly $500,000 of his own money in studio time and other expenses, just to bring fans A Better Tomorrow.

RZA told the New York Times that he’s not only paying for “everything,” he probably won’t recoup the money. “I’m already over budget. Maybe I’ll net out a half-million-dollar loss.”

What with all the discord involving Wu member Raekwon, as well as scheduling conflicts, RZA doesn’t care much about the money that he “invested” in the album. He's rich in other ways. “Look, if I never did anything again in music, it wouldn’t affect my life materially. I live a very satisfying life. Not because I’ve made a few dollars, but because I have a wife who loves me and children who wait for me to come home. And that is beautiful. I think that’s the American dream: to be at peace at home.”

Contentment aside, however, there’s still a chance the RZA can make his money back. He reportedly received a $5 million offer for a single copy of the album.
