Joey Bada$: I Didn’t Know That Was Malia Obama

Rapper says the selfie was already circulating and he had to read the comments to realize it was the first daughter rocking the Pro Era T-shirt.

Malia Obama had the Internet in a frenzy about a week ago when a photo of her wearing a Pro Era T-shirt went viral. As it turns out, the image of the 16-year-old first daughter was as much of a surprise to the hip hop collective's frontman, Joey Bada$, as it was to everybody else.

The 19-year-old Brooklyn rapper talked about the now-famous selfie in an interview with Bloomberg TV, recalling how he was in Australia when the photo started to make the rounds online, and how he didn't realize that it was Malia at first. “I just pretty much woke up one morning and I looked at my phone and I seen a whole bunch of my friends posting this picture of this girl in this Pro Era shirt,” he said. “I was like ‘What's so special about this?’ I didn't know who she was.… as I started reading the comments and the captions then I was like, ‘Ohhhh.’ I wasted no time. I just reposted it myself.”

His management team later confirmed the validity of the photo, stating that it was received from a mutual friend. The White House is investigating how the photo got out.
