Erykah Badu is officially on the other side of the game with a lead role in a new movie.
They Die by Dawn, a Western, features the award-winning singer as Stagecoach Mary in a story about four outlaws who all have a bounty on their heads and are fighting to be the last one standing.
It's set in the first Black settlement post-slavery in Langston, Oklahoma, in the 1800s, with a top-notch cast that includes Hollywood OG Giancarlo Esposito (School Daze, Do the Right Thing, Mo' Betta Blues), The Wire's Michael K. Williams, Top 5's Rosario Dawson and Grey's Anatomy's Jesse Williams.
It's written, directed and produced by U.K.-bred filmmaker/singer/songwriter Jeymes "The Bullitts" Samuels, who also has credits as a music consultant for The Great Gatsby and an onscreen role in this flick (hi, Spike Lee).
Badu, who most recently appeared at the 2015 Black Girls Rock! celebration, has also appeared in movies before, like concert documentary Dave Chappelle's Block Party and as Queen Mousette in 1998's Blues Brothers 2000. She also had a role on Real Husbands of Hollywood. This is her first leading film role.
And it's the first major announcement of its kind for TIDAL. The movie, a short at 50 minutes, is available now on the music streaming service helmed by Jay Z.
