Johnny Kemp, best known for the 1988 hit “Just Got Paid,” passed away Thursday at the age of 55, reports The Bahamas Weekly.
While his death has been confirmed, the details have not yet been revealed, however earlier reports that Kemp fell and hit his head on the Tom Joyner Foundation Fantastic Cruise are untrue, according to the company behind the cruise.
“We have received confirmation that Johnny Kemp has passed away,” Reach Media said in a statement. “We do not have any other details. We can confirm he was not on the ship for the Tom Joyner Foundation Fantastic Voyage Cruise."
Reactions have been pouring in across social media. Salaam Remi posted a tribute to him on Instagram. "#RestinPower to Johnny Kemp...I was raised by a community of NY musicians and you were common visitor. With bright smile and laugh and partner in song and wisdom. You'll be missed prayers to your family and our extended families.”
Kemp, a native of the Bahamas, began his career singing in nightclubs before moving to New York in 1979. His sophomore album, Secrets of Flying, spawned the singles “Just Got Paid” and “Dancin’ With Myself.”
